Bombing a Volcano

Bombs were dropped on a nearby volcano to slow down the flow of lava that was approaching Hilo City. The bombing runs were commanded by a future general George S. Patton. It was later felt that the bombs weren't actually big enough to make a difference. So they thought, you know what, we'll see if we can dig a trench and more to lower it.
