Peery died in 1920, but it wasn't until the 1980s that evidence like Peery's diary was made available to the public. And this evidence did not help his case at all. His diary seems to have been edited with extra bits of paper added to it and even just an analysis of the shadows in the photo suggests that it was taken many kilometres away from the poll. Even national geographic has published an admission that Peery probably fell short by according to their estimates, 50 to 120 kilometres. So he probably didn't make it. Although to this day, there are still those who claimed that he did and claimed that Hanson was the first person to set foot at North Pole.
