Finland and sweden are close partners of nato. They're basically as close as you could geto without actually being in the alliance. Dozens of countries are contributing troops to the coalition effort here in afghanistan. Istonia, for one, is punching well above its weight.
Their admission to NATO would further isolate Russia, leaving it the only Arctic country outside the alliance.
