The Fall of the Roman Empire
In 376, there was an empire in western Europe. In 476 or 550, it had been replaced by a succession of kingdoms ruled by barbarians. The barbarian world isn't understandable as something separate from the Roman world. No barbarian really wanted to burn Rome to the ground. You can extract tax revenues from a ruined villa or field and there's no indoor plumbing in a burnt out house.
