There are not that many differences between the whale and the human being. If you have a particular nucleotide or particular residue in a protein that's very well conserved the most mammals, then changes are quite an important one. You can make 3D models of proteins from the bowhead whale, for example, based on the changes on the mutations that were observed in the bowhead whales compared to other mammals.
