The socialist movement internationally in the late 19th century was quite sympathetic to nationalism. International socialism actually celebrated the community of brethren as it were from their different nations. So the Zionists didn't really have to feel that they were living a contradiction. The so-called universalism of socialism is something that we shouldn't exaggerate that there's always an openness towards nationalism.
