A Transcendental Horizon for Our Ethics

We do need a transcendent horizon for our ethics. Different societies have very different understandings of what it is to live well. It's not something that is self-evident, otherwise everybody would live in exactly the same way. But if we're looking at track record here, lots of the things you've described often have been fought for in the teeth of opposition from organised religions. So it wouldn't be a natural link to say, if you want these good things, you better keep, hang on to faith when the track record possibly comes out even worse for the organised faith than it does to the humanists.
