In his instructions to his agents in Genoa, Bonaparte was careful to stress that all of this procurement was to be done quietly. Under no circumstances was anything ever to be distributed among the men outside of the normal provisioning of rations and resupply. No sharing of loot as a victory bonus. No disbursement of salaries beyond the payroll that arrived from Paris. Napoleon seized the opportunity to crack down on subversion and insubordination. Two officers were punished for the crime of shouting out the old pre-revolutionary cry: "I'm king"
