The Social Function of Stories
In Greece the plays are part of a religious ritual. According to Aristotle the function is catharsis. This purging of emotions of pity and fear. And nowadays the fundamental function of a story is to make money. To cause someone to buy a ticket, sign up for a streaming service or whatever. Sometimes just get a tax off and buy by destroying the film before it is ever released.
