The insects are fed on food waste they get from local businesses. The maggots start metamorphosizing as soon as the flies start moving around. They can't eat, so they haven't got long to do the magic, which is find the mate and lay eggs. These flies are now ready to go into the mating cages to be used to create the next generation.
