Caroline Harakain's NHL team strength coach doesn't do loaded movements to affect the spine. "I want to create some space there and maybe loading into the lower body would be good," he says. He could see perhaps holding onto a medicine ball or something very close to your center, but I think loading below the spine is more advantageous.
