Suharto would not have been able to become dictator if he had not crushed and terrified the left of the country. It's still very hard to get elderly and in Asians to talk about what they were doing in the 60s or their political beliefs. I think another example of LBJ's efforts can be seen in what happened in Vietnam, but when he was gone, it was like the decks were cleared.
