The Importance of Meditating With the Bible
Moby Dick is a book very much like the Brothers Karamazov that emphasises the importance of engaging with the Bible. Like Shakespeare, Melville is secular scripture so that means reading with some reverence but it also means reading with great gusto. It need not be a solemn, joyless experience because the books of the Bible were composed with great vitality and visionary prowess. We should experience them and digest them in the same way as we do during our more overtly religious or spiritual practices. I find that our engagement with great imaginative literature in such a thoroughly scriptural way really exemplifies what Nietzsche said about religious feeling.
