The Difference Between Fission and Fusion

Fusion and fission release approximately a million times more energy per unit mass than chemical reactions. Light elements, by contrast, have very few nucleons, protons, or neutrons in the nucleus. To get them close enough together to react, you have to overcome the repulsion of the two nuclei from one another. And so one requires very high energies of impact in order for reactions to take place.
