Why Did Eldred's Coronation Come to an End?

Eldred declared that he would only crown william if he swore on the bible that he would rule as the best kings of england had done before him. John of worcester adds that eldred insisted that william swear to rule all the people justly. So basically, we're told that Eld was forcing the coronation as a way to force william to publicly promise god that he would chill the fork out and stop murdering everyone.
