When i was in college, i was told that dowry was some of the worst things in the world. And then i went to greece, and i thought, we all these backward people have dowries. It was, again, a cultural reaction to the biological fact that men, traditionally, are more promiscuous than women are. Women who have children and a family need to be protected from that biological fact. Modernism did a lot of damage, and we haven't even calebrated what it has done.
