The french are going eastward from senegal through the sahel, following the southern border of the sahara. The ultimate goal is to have an uninterrupted link between the niger river and the nile. In that way, you can control all the trade into the sahel region from both directions. So this dream of a dacar to jabotia railroad or link of any kind, is not very realistic. And then, of course, there's the question of egypt. I know we covered this a while back, but the french remember what happened in egypt,. They're still unhappy about the way the british forced them out of eEgypt.
