The Importance of Causal Principles in the Brain
If there is this two way influence, even if these large scale features have a causal influence on the unfolding of the system, then it is going to have to show up at the fine grain level. And as you said, we do understand why neurons fire pretty well, I think. So it's not that the basic chemistry is wrong. It's just that there are more forces or causal principles that kick in in certain complex neural systems. Now, it seems to me that's an empirical question, whether that happens. We just don't know enough about the workings of the brain to answer that empirical question either way.
