Pikemen and the Battle of Bannockburn
Scotland was engaged in a war of independence with england. The english king edward, sent a much larger army to relieve the castle and fight off this scottish besieging force. They had several hundred knights on horseback, compared to probably only about 50 scottish knights. And if you're in a tight formation of pikemen and you all put you plant your pikes and hold them in formation, you create, in effect, a kind of spiked defensive wall that can at least serve a little bit to protect you against charging cavalry.
