Moses and the Israelites are in a real sense a replay or an echo of Adam in the garden. They've plundered Egypt and then they take the plunder and use it for idolatrous worship. When they enter the promised land, they don't obey God and eliminate all the nations. And what happens? Exactly what you just said. It's literally what God knows what he's talking about.
