I always had to like strive to be better so that no one can think, Oh, she's slacking off or she's just coasting by. So I would literally kill myself trying to prove that I'm worthy of like scholarships or opportunities. That feeling is something that is translated to quite a number of people across history. And it's why I really wanted to bring her up. Even though she was cruel and did terrible things, she did it specifically in order to maintain her absolute authority and the will of her country.
In 1828, after the death of her husband, Queen Ranavalona I. came into power by killing all other potential regents (wives, sons, mothers). At that time, she was between 30 and 40 years old. Ranavalona I. went down in history rather ingloriously and bears the surname “the cruel”. Many Malagasy call her regency tany maizina, in English “years of darkness”. But despite this she is still a rather complex character. One who did amazing and terrible things at the same time. Let us tell her story today
