The Evolution of Behavioral Variants in Bumblebee Problem Solving

Researchers in the U.S. have found that social learning can be used to spread ideas across a population of insects. The study was conducted on Bumblebee colonies and involved feeding boxes with demonstrators trained to perform one of two possible behavioral variants. This preference persisted among observers even when the alternative technique was discovered, says Andrew Keen. It raises questions because not all high monopterans are annuals like bumble bees or Fatch Ants.
