The conspiracy theory about the Illuminati started up after the French Revolution. It merged with existing fears about masonry in the United States to be part of this big anti-Masonic movement. We got guys like Abigail Adams and even George Washington himself who bought into this conspiracy. But America's public obsession with conspiracy theories never quite did.
