i think that the movie, in this way, speaks to the sense of our own civilization being in decline to day. The green night does not just symbolize as it might have in the middle ages. It also represents a kind of vengeful nature intruding directly into and undermining an already weakened society. And in that way, obviously, it should practically go without saying this resinates with current anxieties about climate change and about ecological disaster in general. But that parallel, i think, is so obvious that i won't even dwell on it.
