The Resource Theory of Thermodynamics
In the resource theory of thermodynamics, we have systems that are in thermal equilibrium and they are described by something known as the GIB state. Now what is a density matrix? The first axiom of quantum mechanics related for any, any physical system there is a corresponding Hilbert space. And so you have to make some this correlation with a reference system like the environment or whatever it is. It's essentially the formalism of quantum mechanics modified slightly to incorporate these possible interaction with the environment.
