The other great reason to take on responsibilities above your level is it makes the transition into that new roll so much smoother. If you got promoted to morrow, you could step the roll immediately with no learning curve, no disruption, you just be good to go. That eliminates so much stress, a lot of the risk, and it makes you look even more like a rock
