The wealthier and safer a society was, the more egotistical and greedy the citizenry grew. This led to bitter enmity between nobles and plebs as their goals were irreconcilably opposed. In machiavelli's experience, they were craven, self serving fools who would sooner sell their own grandmother than pass up a chance to enrich themselves.
