The Tale of Cupid and Psyche and Lucas' Escape
In this chapter, a vile old crone tells a story to calm down a girl who is freaking out. The story is a cross between a fairy tale and an allegory of the soul's journey in the material world. It is the tale of Cupid and Psyche, which occupies the next few books of the Menomorphoses. After the story, Lucas escapes from the robbers with the maiden on his back, but they are caught again. However, they are saved by the fiance of the maiden who kills the robbers and escapes with their loot. The chapter ends with the maiden insisting that Lucas be put out to pasture and live a comfortable life.
