Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state. People in positions of power had to come up with a new tactic, a new way to limit the parameters of people's thinking. They did this to drum up support for a type of patriotism that alligned itself with us. Well, the us ended up getting involved in world war one in a big way.
