In 1894, Chicago mayor Carter Harrison was shot three times at close range by a vengeful city official. The criminal underworld had nothing to do with his death, but without his main mouthpiece, King Mike was deposed. Still various Irish criminal political machines kept running through the end of the 19th century all over America. In Boston there was a huge Irish population and where one upstart James Michael Curly extorted his followers to vote early and often for him.
