The Purgative, Illuminative and Unitive Ways of Spiritual Life
The three stages are roughly the stages of life. You can think of the purgative way when you're rooting out those mortal sins, those grave sins trying to fix yourself in the good. The illuminative way is a kind of adolescence and the unitive way that kind of full and robust living of life with God would be like adulthood. So I think that this is to kind of answer the question obliquely, how do you sort out the division between mortal sin and venial sin?
