In a very short period of time, we're going to have machines that are indistinguishable from conscious beings. The key step is the ability that the machines have to act in the physical world. And given that feedback mechanism, which will be an inevitable part of these machines, there is a real possibility of them being able to develop some form of embodied cognition.
