The Stock Market's Role in the Economy

In the late 1980s, we had a stock market crash in October of 87 and a wave of bank failures throughout the latter half of the 1980s right on into 1990. Where was Great Depression 2.0? The FDIC says there was 262 bank failures in 87. And the economy didn't seem to be bothered by anything until July of 1990.
