Social Media - What Is Mega Scale?
What is mega scale and how does that shape the logic of the social media we have now? Yeah, mega skills. It's a term I borrowed from my Atlantic colleague, Adrian Le France, to describe this idea in contemporary internet business culture where you're failing unless you've reached a billion users on a massive profit margin. That logic of mega scale means that when you make a company like Facebook or Instagram or WhatsApp or whatever, it's all Facebook. So another feature of mega scale is a kind of sameness. You're designing a kind of a machine, like a really simple machine that you turn the crank of the machine and it does the same thing for everyone.
