The Early Foucault: A History of Madness
Foucault in the 1950s would be difficult to write, but I went away thinking that it would be really interesting to get to write. So we have a very few texts that Foucault published in the 50s,. A short book called Mental Illness and Personality which he later refuses quite extensively. There's material at Emec, the contemporary archive in Normandy from his courses there. We have various bits and pieces of other things that he looked like he might have been writing towards at that time. Then we have Foucault's reading notes, and various other sources. It's using whatever sources we've got to tell that story.
