The Impeachment Process Is Broken
I think a healthy republic would have impeached and removed Trump within 48 hours of the Capitol riots. And I tend to agree with you that the charge of dereliction of duty is probably would have been the strongest thing to impeach Trump on. The violence is almost ancillary because merely sending a mob to protest Congress is something that should rightfully have pissed off Congress. So like Congress has been gilded, Republicans and Democrats alike didn't want to have witnesses and either impeachment.
