The Flood Story in the Hebrew Bible
The story of the flood was not simply lifted from Gilgamesh and dumped into Genesis. The two texts reworked the same basic plot for their own ends. Hebrew Bible made the flood a story of human sin and subsequent covenant with God. While cuneiform works like the creation story and Gilgamesh used it to explain the origin of omens and necessity of death.
