SPECIAL - The Pre-Columbian Mound Builders of North America

History of the World podcast

CHAPTER

The Placamine Culture in the Americas

The Placamine culture can be seen as a progression of the Coles Creek culture. The mound building style of the Placamine was set out to look like a ceremonial centre. Shallow graves found on these mounds are thought by some to actually be primary burial locations before the bodies were re-intered at a later time. Burials and sacrifice of objects and living beings to aid the deceased in their afterlife or to honour the spirits of the earth seem to be a common feature of America and Eurasia.
