No ho really knew where he stood politically. He had a respect for institutions and an order, right? But that obviously starts to erode as we get into the sixties and seventies. And i think you can also tell the story about him that his experience with bureaucracies inclined him to see government positively - not just in the military, but in civilian life. So partly, he had the experience of having succeeded with government to solve some of the world's greatest problems. Also understood that this wis what the popular sentiment was, and if the republicans were going to get back into office, this is what a republican president had to do.
