The Importance of Image Affect and Meaning
Ulysses is no more a pathological product than modern art as a whole. Jung suggests that the affect images of works of art work in a new way to deconstruct conventional thought and create a new, or what Hegel might have called, sublated, reality. In the artist, it has a creative purpose. Far from his work being an expression of the destruction of his personality, the modern artist finds the unity of his artistic personality in the destructiveness.
