The Adaptive Function of Dreaming
David Eagleman's theory about the adaptive function of dreaming was that it is a defensive action of the visual center of the brain to prevent takeover of that tissue by other senses during the dark period and the night. But there's a totally separate question which is what determines the actual contents of dreams. So why do we see the things we see? And that's an interesting psychological question that seems somewhat separate.
