The tools used to probe the brain are becoming smaller and less invasive. This could lead to studies that involve informed human consent of their own brain. But in order to minimize those tools, we might have to rely on monkeys for some time. The unfortunate truth is that we humans don't really understand our brains well enough yet to study them safely.
