There's actually a moment where a t-dwell tells tort helm to have courage. Tort discovers what we already know the Vikings came across the causeway without a fight and he really wonders how that could even be. The vikings landed on this this island that was well it's more like a spit of land connected by a very narrow little bit. They could only cross that in single file which of course would be easily defensible just to line up a bunch of archers.
