Fusion technology is not mature enough to produce energy at a cost that would be competitive with fossil fuels. It's too expensive for large-scale power plants, which are more likely to succeed in the long run. The field needs philanthropic and private investors who want to save the planet as well as make money down the road. But it will take years before these projects can even get off the ground because of their complexity.
