The Chronicle gives us a good long blast about the evils of Stephen's reign. But we have to wait until very close to the end to get to one of the most evocative entries. There can't be a much stronger indication of the misery of the period than the feeling that God himself was no longer interested in protecting his people, especially in an age of such faith. And as with so many events in Medivin England, the misery of this era was seen as God's punishment for men's sins.
