In the modern secular world there are no systems that are not reliant on shared religious identity, which tie people in together. But i agree with you that viewing religion as the sole source for those kind of trust networks is feticizing older systems and isn't necessarily true. I accept the very weak point that es some method to the madness of religious practices, but i reject the idea that it's the only source of good practices.
