The History of the Dalcon Shield
At the time, strict FDA regulations that applied to medications were not required of medical devices. This meant there was zero oversight when it came to selling items such as IUDs or dentures. By 1970, multiple large pharmaceutical companies had approached the Dalcon Corporation about purchasing the rights to the IUD. A Richmond, Virginia-based Fortune 500 company called A.H. Robbins made the deal.
