The Romans Are Farmers, Not Farmers
The british chose to meet caesar on his own terms. They could have ambushed them, sabotaged their efforts to repair their ships and engaged in raids against any groups of roman soldiers who strayed too far from the protection of their brothers. If they kept the pressure up, they probably could have bled and starved the romans out. But that doesn't mean that caesar dealt with this attack kindly and just let it go. Just because he couldn't catch the warriors didni't mean that he couldn't seek revenge. And so he unleashed his legions, and they pillaged and burned everything in sight.
