The Role of Phonemic Awareness in Learning to Read
The phonemic awareness instruction, it's a means to an end. When we look at research of why students struggle to become automatic decoders of print, it consistently comes back to phonological and phonemic awareness. If that strand is missing, they're not going to be automatic decoder of print. So I would say, well, they might start out, you kind of see them all on their own. But that application is really what you think of when you think of that site, site recognition portion. Our students need that application.
