The Origins of the Romans
Romany has this heavily indian vocabulary, but a much more complex creolized syntax. This suggests that as they migrated, the roma were not necessarily adapting or assimilating into these societies and adopting their languages. Rather, certain numbers of people were coming over and joining them,. bringing in the syntax that they knew, retaining it and sometimes working it into the romany language. So hence, you end up with this interesting kind of hybrid language which i think reflects this pattern where this distinct group somehow maintained its separate identity and its own language.
